MANAGEMENT

Definition

Seels & Richey (1994) define  management as "controlling Instructional Technology through planning, organizing, coordinating, and supervising" (p. 49). In other words, this standard defines management as the planning and organization of the ID process with considerations of the 4 subdomains:  Project Management, Resource Management, Delivery System Management, and Information Management.

Reflection

Prior to starting the IDT program, I had some experience in managing, coordinating, organizing, and training. I had to ensure that the office staff was trained, that they were updated on policy and procedural changes, as well as coordinate schedules, trainings, and meetings. A management role has many demands that require a person to think on their feet, maintain a high degree of organization and composure. This role afforded me the opportunity to develop those skills which are applicable to most other fields.

In my current role as a Graduate Assistance, I manage enrollments and course scheduling. I also work closely with the directors in planning for future workshops and trainings. Included in my duties of managing training session, I have to ensure the desks are arranged to best suit the class and ensure the technology is working properly.

In my work developing the next generation Canvas training, I have to sort through previous workshop strategies and make decisions about what elements to keep and which ones will no longer be needed. Generation three workshops are shifting from a button-pushing type of training into a more hands-on interactive practice sessions which will offer faculty opportunities to address questions and practice using Canvas tools and gain a better understanding in "HOW" to apply these tools in their courses.

While working on my project for EDIT 5564 Design for Learning, my group had weekly meetings where we discussed the next steps in creating our project. this entailed taking careful notes using a shared google doc, as well as working together on individual tasks. This experience gave us the opportunity to work as team (which is like a real-world simulation) and experience planning and organizing in this context which was different than what I was used to.

This semester I am working on five projects and so I have each of these projects on a timeline in order for me to meet benchmarks and the terminal deadline. This requires a high degree of management and organization, which thankfully, I have developed throughout my adult life!

Artifacts

4.1 Project Management

"Planning, monitoring, and controlling instructional design and development projects" (Seels & Richey, 1994, p. 50). Project managers negotiate, budget, install information monitoring systems, and evaluate progress and improvement (AECT Standards).

Canvas Rubrics

This is a project I am currently working on and every week have goals as I manage the project to meet particular benchmarks. This artifact reflects planning and monitoring my project through the use of deadlines and benchmarks.

Evaluation Project Proposal

In this artifact, I wrote a project proposal for my evaluation course.  I proposed to conduct an evaluation on the cohort program which entailed meeting with stakeholders, keeping on the agreed upon benchmarks, collecting data from participants, analyzing the data, and offering possible suggestions for improvement.

Evaluation Plan

This is the evaluation plan that I created for a Summer Cohort program for the Product and Program Evaluation course. This plan outlines the program, describes the purpose, lists the stakeholders, identifies the key questions, describes the methods and instrumentation, data collection plan, survey, and timeline for benchmarks.

4.2 Resource Management

"Planning, monitoring, and controlling 'the method by which distribution of instructional materials is organized' ...
It is a combination of medium and method of usage that is employed to present instructional information to a learner" (Seels & Richey,  1994, p. 51). This includes documentation of cost effectiveness and justification of effectiveness or efficiency for learning as well as the resources of personnel, budget, supplies, time, facilities, and instructional resources (AECT Standards).

Distance Education Project Plan

This artifact for a project proposal for Distance Education. It outlines the plan to implement a "what are rubrics" module. It provides an overview of the module unit, outlines the justification of the project, details the resources needed, identifies the materials and budget as well.

Rubrics Time Log

In this artifact from Project and Report and demonstrates the time and activities I engaged in for this particular project where I spent over 160 hours in order to design, develop, implement, and evaluate.

4.3 Delivery System Management

"Delivery system management involves planning, monitoring and controlling ‘the method by which distribution of instructional materials is organized’ . . . [It is] a combination of medium and method of usage that is employed to present instructional information to a learner. This includes attention to hardware and software requirements, technical support for the users and developers, and process issues such as guidelines for designers, instructors, and ECIT support personnel (AECT Standards).

Canvas Rubrics

I selected this artifact again because it is an online learning module that was created in Captivate and is accessed only by faculty who register for the course. Participants are also given IT support through the help desk. I used an LMS to store the instruction using Captivate and made accessible to faculty.

4.4 Information Management

"Planning, monitoring, and controlling the storage, transfer, or processing of information in order to provide resources for learning" (Seels & Richey, 1994, p. 51). Information is available in many formats and candidates must be able to access and utilize a variety of information sources for their professional benefit and the benefit of their future learners (AECT Standards).

Resource guide

This is a guide in development for the next generation Canvas workshops. It provides participants with useful resources to use while learning how to use Canvas.
